A Terrible Mistake

It has been acknowledged from the beginning of time that humans tend to constantly ignore wise advice. Overlooking the consequences of an action, stopping common sense from entering our minds, and ignoring essential advice resulting in a dreadful end. The short story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London is the kind of story that introduces a character whose mind just does not work normally, a character who chooses foolish routes but most importantly disregards intelligent advice.

Throughout our lifetime, we can all identify an occasion in where we have either overlooked or ignored wise advice, thus resulting in many misfortunes, disasters, and tragedies. The story “To Build a Fire” fits this description like a glove; it introduces a unique character whose lack of imagination and common sense impairs his choice between right and wrong. Therefore, his actions to normal people are considered insane. If you have heard the Yukon Code “He travels faster who travels alone- but not after the frost has dropped below fifty degrees or more” you would find this logic and would never give it a second thought. However, the main character chooses the most illogical decision by venturing out in the frigid minus seventy-five degree temperatures. It is phrases like these or advice like this that should never be ignored; otherwise, you could end up in a complicated situation.

Regardless of the fact that humans are sometime tempted to go the wrong course by disregarding valuable advice, we have been introduced to many important people who by listening to a pure advice have changed their lives drastically. Some of us may know the talented young girl Demi Lovato, actress and singer, who worked with the Disney Productions. After three years in this harsh industry, her mind and body just do not work as they should. Common sense has faded by the crucial rejections and somewhat of a "diva" persona. Despite this all ,she was able to take the situation by the reins and consider her mother's advice: signing up for rehab. Now Demi is rising up to the world again, head up and ready to live her life the right way.
Not only does the author, Jack London teach the audience an essential lesson about traveling in a freezing temperature, but also provides the audience an amazing setting in his writing for this tragedy. He was able to extend the fact that it was snowy and incredibly cold making winter sound like any person’s worst nightmare. The way Jack London expressed the freezing cold as well as how he showed the naiveté and the desperation of this character is just outstanding. This is of course including how he emphasized and repeated valuable information in order to create a vivid picture of this startling scene. Such as when he emphasized the phrase, "It's cold. It certainly is cold," this just planted a picture of a freezing place showered by a beautiful blanket of snow, intact and gentle. Certainly the fact that all of the misfortune that ever happened due to the character's lack of common sense and failure at listening to the cleverness of the old man giving him such important advice is quite eye-opening . It is difficult to admit that at times we just have to listen to the knowledgeable; they have more experience and could save us major trouble.

As we age, knowledge and maturity feed our past, giving us the wisdom to receive great advice and the ability to ponder our actions. The story "To Build a Fire" is truly an astonishing story showing the significance of valuable advice and common sense. Life gives us lemons but it's up to us to decide whether to make lemonade.

 Good-bye Sleep. . .

Breath taking, terribly horrible, and traumatizing. How is possible to endure all of these feelings?! How is it possible to be able to go through that movie again?! Some may say that I'm very weak or a chicken but once you see that movie your whole body will just. Freeze. There is no possible way that after experiencing an hour and half of this terrifying movie you’re still able to make a sound other that "AHHH!!!". Bloodcurdling, spine tingling, and hair raising are all of the words that pop to my mind. I'm scared to even think about it, scared to think that such things could happen to me! I must warn you the movie "Shuttle" will be a one way trip to hell.
